Largo's History
October 31, 2024
Largo was one of the first places settled along the coast. 1n 1842, the Federal government passed the Armed Occupation Act which provided 160 acres of land for anyone who would live on the land for five years and agree to serve in the military, if needed. The McMullen and McKay families took the opportunity and settled in what was to become Largo.

Since at least 1902, there was a "feed store" near the Atlantic Coastline railroad in Largo, that served the needs of local cattle ranchers, citrus and produce growers who were primary to the economy of the area.
By 1910, Largo was an incorporated town with a population of 291.

She was just a young girl of seventeen when she arrived in Largo with her family in 1925 but over the next seventy years Sadie Crawford Johnson spent a good portion of her time chronicling the lives and legends of her adopted hometown and championing for its preservation.

Majestic McKay Creek flows from its beginnings in mid-Pinellas County toward the bay in a graceful ebb of an ever-changing environment. At some points along the creek, the stately herons stand their ever-watchful guard for a next meal; Florida alligators roam along the banks; and as you approach the bay, docks and boats stand ready for easy access to fun on the water.

It all started in 1916! That was the year the enterprising ladies of the Woman’s Club of Largo lit a spark in the community that created what was to become the Pinellas County Fair.

Sometime around 1935, Emmette Jackson (b. 1890) built the West Coast Garage at its present location at 280 West Bay Drive. For 90 years, Jackson’s West Coast Garage has been a cornerstone of Largo’s rich history.

Harbor Bluffs, although now part of unincorporated Pinellas County, was once inside Largo's boundaries, and its history, growth, and development closely parallel that of our city.
